Shiffrin did not receive a medal, but she finished the race and, perhaps more importantly, demonstrated that she could do it despite the previous week’s challenges.

“I think today I proved to myself that I can still trust my instincts a little bit,” Shiffrin said after the race on NBC. “And that is extremely significant.”

Shiffrin finished the super-G in 1:14.30, two days after slipping just five seconds into the first run of her slalom race and four days after skiing out 11 seconds into her opening run of the giant slalom.

There was an accent:

The 26-year-old American, who arrived in Beijing as one of the Games’ faces and was expected to win multiple medals, couldn’t hide her disappointment following her early slalom exit. She sat alone on the course’s side for several minutes, her head in her hands. Shiffrin, a three-time Olympic medalist with 73 World Cup wins, spoke candidly with reporters shortly after about her uncharacteristic performances in the first two races.

She stated that she was perplexed, questioning everything she knew about skiing, and didn’t know how to proceed.

“I’ll try to reset again,” she said, “and maybe reset better this time.” “But I also don’t know how to do it better because I’ve never been in this situation before and I’m not sure how to deal with it.”

2022 Super G:

Shiffrin has had a difficult start to the 2022 Olympics. On Monday, the 26-year-old American slid off course around 10 seconds into the giant slalom and again nearly half an hour later in the slalom on Wednesday.

“I’ve had a lot of support over the last 48 hours,” Shiffrin posted on Facebook on Friday, “and I have to thank everyone.”

She won the slalom at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 and the giant slalom at the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018.
