The Beast Must Die by Nicholas Blake

Among the most successful detective novels ever written is The Beast Must Die by Nicholas Blake. The novel has been adapted into several films and television shows over the years. It was first adapted into a film by Roman Vinoly Barreto in 1952. It was later adapted into the British series This Man Must Die and then the U.S. TV-MA series.

The Beast Must Die tells the story of crime writer Frank Cairns. He has been called in to help track down a hit-and-run driver who has killed his son. Cairns is also the prime suspect in the murder. However, Cairns insists that he was the victim of a mistake. This leads to a brilliant twist in the novel.

Although the novel is a classic crime thriller, it has a few flaws. One of them is the self-conscious artifice of the story. The plot is sluggish in the third act, but the novel starts and ends strongly.

Its premise is bold, but it could be viewed as foolhardy. However, the novel’s treatment of the basic idea is more effective.

Blake’s novels are very literate, with clever twists and clever clues. The story takes place against a backdrop of daily life in Britain. Although it is an excellent novel, it isn’t necessarily the best work by Blake.

The music halls of London are seedy and fun to watch. Kate Griffin is a true-born Cockney who has written other genres. She has worked as a journalist for local newspapers and as an assistant to an antique dealer. She lives in St Albans and is a member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

There are many mysteries in this novel. One is the mysterious disappearance of chorus girls from the music halls of Limehouse. There is also an ancient opium-addicted criminal baroness. The book’s other-matter-middle is Kitty’s attempt to solve the mystery and save her family.

Sandrine’s Case by Thomas H. Cook

Despite its name, Sandrine’s Case is not for the squeamish. It’s a smouldering novel about a man accused of killing his wife and trying to clear his name. It’s not as edgy as the best mystery books, but it’s a good read.

It’s a well-written novel that keeps the reader turning the pages. The big payoff is when the main character learns something about himself. There’s also a bit of unfair comparison going on.

The author is no slouch when it comes to crime fiction. He has written eighteen novels, two short story collections, and two true crime books. His first novel, The Chatham School Affair, received the prestigious Edgar Award for the best mystery novel of the year from Mystery Writers of America. He’s also won the Herodotus Prize for the best historical short story.

Aside from his best-selling books, Cook also taught English and history at Dekalb Community College from 1978 to 1981. He then worked as a book review editor at Atlanta Magazine. A few years later, Cook became a full-time writer. He has since published over twenty books and anthologies, including The Best American Crime Writing 2002-2004. Among other achievements, he’s been named the top crime fiction author in the country by The New York Times, and the best crime fiction author in the United Kingdom by The Times.
